Giovanni Emejuru had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds but East Carolina dropped its second straight game on Friday night, falling 77-65 to Charleston Southern inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.

Jordan Riley added 15 points and six rebounds while Tybo Bailey scored 12 for the Pirates (2-3) who were outscored from behind the arc by a margin of 39 points.

Brycen Blaine led Charleston Southern (4-3) and all scorers with 23 points.

Charleston Southern hit two of their first four from behind the arc to jump out to an early 8-2 lead at the 17:15 mark of the first half. The Buccaneers’ lead would grow to as much as 14 after another run, this time 7-2, forcing a timeout from the Pirates.

Coming out of the timeout, the Pirates slowly chipped away at the Buccaneers’ lead, pulling within two on a Bailey three and within one on a free throw from Emejuru at the 3:14 mark of the first half that made the score 29-28.

Charleston Southern closed the half on an 8-2 run to go into the locker room ahead 37-30 and have the Pirates facing their second straight halftime deficit.

The Pirates pulled within a possession on two separate occasions in the first 10 minutes of the second half but the Buccaneers outscored ECU 17-11 over an eight-minute span that was capped off by a Blaine three-pointer to make the score 71-59 with just over four minutes remaining as Charleston Southern secured the road win.
