Parker Byrd is continuing a new tradition of helping children and families at the children’s hospital in Greenville.
The Homers That Help is a charity initiative supporting families at the James and Connie Maynard Children’s Hospital at ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville. Carter Cunningham, who is now playing in the minor leagues with the Vancouver Canadians, started participating in 2023. He was involved in a career shadowing experience at the hospital and saw a need to do more to help the children and parents.
Cunningham and his teammates raised $500, which they used to buy gifts and spend time playing with the children, according to an article written by ECU Health.
Cunningham launched Homers That Help where donations would be pledged for each ECU home game where a home run was hit. It raised $50,000 in the first season. He is still involved in the program and now has assistance from Byrd.
Byrd, who is a celebrity of his own through his charity work, playing baseball, his podcast on Pirate Radio called “The Parker Byrd Show” and his story of losing his leg in a boating accident, said he wanted to help continue the tradition.
“Carter told me about his plans early on, and I saw firsthand the impact it was having,” Byrd said. “When he asked if I could take over, it was an honor.”
