Jeff Hoffman came into Monday’s Spring Training game for the Toronto Blue Jays ready to go to work.
The ECU alum struck out the three batters he faced on 14 pitches, 10 of them for strikes. That’s what the Blue Jays were hoping they’d get from him each time.
The Sudbury Star did a feature on Hoffman, who was originally drafted by the Blue Jays to be a starter. He’s back with the team and could be its newest closer.
He said it’s not a position that will be gifted to him, so he’s anxious to go on the mound and prove he deserves the spot.
“I think that’s definitely something that needs to be earned,” The newspaper reports after Hoffman signed his three-year, $33-million US deal to return to the team that selected him ninth overall in the 2014 draft.
“I don’t think that’s something that should be handed out for fun. That’s a big, important job and definitely something that I want to be able to pitch myself into.”
