ECU Alum Gavin Williams tossed seven innings of one-hit, one-run ball to lead the Cleveland Guardians to a 4-2 win over the Kansas City Royals Monday at Kauffman Stadium.

Williams retired the final 16 batters and struck out six to improve to 3-7. Over the last three games, MLB.com reports Cleveland’s starters have each gone at least six innings and allowed one run or fewer — which is only the second time all season Cleveland has put together a stretch of starting performances that strong (May 17-19 vs. Minnesota).
“It’s very important, honestly,” Williams said of the work of Cleveland’s starting pitchers. “Especially the way the bullpen has picked us up a little bit sometimes. So it’s time for us to pick them up.”
The Associated Press reports Williams went 1-4 with a 6.56 ERA in five August starts.
“Filling up the zone,” Williams said. “Talking with (catcher) Bo (Naylor) and having a better plan. Just seeing the way they took different pitches.”
