Carteret Community College has appointed Scott Lane as the College’s first Athletics Director, marking a major milestone in the launch of its new intercollegiate athletics program. Lane will also continue serving as Vice President of Finance & Administrative Services, overseeing the College’s financial operations as Chief Financial Officer.

In this new role, Lane will lead the creation and administration of Carteret’s athletics program, recently accepted into the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). The College has been approved to offer women’s soccer, women’s cross country, and men’s baseball as its inaugural sports. The addition of intercollegiate athletics represents a bold step forward, expanding opportunities for student engagement, community connection, and school pride.

Lane brings more than 17 years of NCAA Division I experience to the position. He spent most of his career with East Carolina University’s Athletics Department, rising from student worker to Associate Athletics Director. At ECU, he oversaw Ticket Operations and Sales and served as Sport Administrator for several teams. He also worked as Assistant Athletics Director for Ticket Services at Baylor University before returning to ECU.

Lane joined Carteret Community College in 2020 and holds a Master of Arts in Sport Management and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (Finance) from East Carolina University.

A Vision for Growth & Community Pride

“It’s an incredible honor to serve as Carteret’s first Athletics Director and help build a program that reflects the energy and excellence of this College and community,” said Lane. “Joining the NJCAA is a major step forward. It opens the door for our students to compete nationally while representing Carteret with pride on and off the field. I’m deeply grateful to Dr. Tracy Mancini and the Board of Trustees for their trust and support in bringing intercollegiate athletics to Carteret.”

Lane’s vision for Kraken Athletics centers on using sports as a vehicle for education and personal growth.

“Athletics is an extension of our educational mission,” he explained. “We want to create opportunities for local student-athletes to stay in Carteret County to pursue both academic and athletic goals, while building school spirit and community pride. Our goal is to develop the whole student—academically, athletically, and personally—through a culture of excellence, leadership, and sportsmanship.”

Under Lane’s leadership, the athletics program will emphasize academic achievement, compliance, life skills, community service, and athletic excellence, preparing student-athletes for lifelong success.

“Carteret Community College is delighted that Scott Lane will oversee the launch of Kraken Athletics,” said college president Dr. Tracy Mancini. “His experience with all aspects of collegiate athletics, from fundraising and program development to recruitment, retention, marketing, scheduling, and game-day details will provide a valuable foundation upon which to build a strong student-centered program.”

Looking Ahead

The College will announce coaching hires and competition timelines in the coming months. The launch of intercollegiate athletics underscores Carteret Community College’s commitment to enhancing the student experience and strengthening community ties through academic and extracurricular excellence.
