ECU women open AAC tourney play with victory over Memphis

The East Carolina women’s basketball team opened play in the AAC Tournament with a 64-45 win over Memphis during the third game of Sunday’s play in Forth Worth, Texas.

The Pirates, the No. 7 seed, advance to Monday’s play against No. 2 seed North Texas. The two teams will play at 7 p.m.

FORT WORTH, Texas – No. 7 seed East Carolina defeated No. 10 seed Memphis, 64-45, in the second round of the 2025 American Women’s Basketball Championship Sunday evening, March 9, at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.


With the win, the Pirates (17-14) advance to the quarterfinals to take on No. 2 seed North Texas on Monday, March 10 at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT on ESPN+. This is the third straight year the Pirates have advanced to the quarterfinals, winning seven of their last eight Championship games.

Sunday’s contest marked the fourth consecutive Championship that East Carolina and Memphis have played each other and was the third win in a row for the Pirates.

East Carolina held Memphis (7-23) to shooting 17.6 percent (3-of-17) from the field in the first quarter, as the Tigers made one of their final nine attempts, jumping out to a 13-7 lead. The lead grew as big as 22 points in the fourth quarter.

Amiya Joyner grabbed 11 rebounds, breaking the career rebounds record in The American Championship. She now has 101 career rebounds, one higher than the previous record of 100 set by Bethy Mununga of South Florida (2020-2022).

Elauna Eaton scored 10 points, while Alasia Smith grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Tigers.
