CLEARWATER, Fla. – Defending champion East Carolina punched a return ticket to the NCAA tournament on Sunday to close the 2026 American Baseball Championship at BayCare Ballpark. The No. 2 seed Pirates avenged a prior day loss to No. 1 UTSA by shutting out the Roadrunners 1-0 in the championship game clash.

ECU (36-22-1) improved to 5-2 all-time in the American championship game, adding a 2026 tournament crown to triumphs in 2015, 2018, 2022 and 2025. UTSA (38-20) was denied an American tournament championship in its first Sunday appearance in the event since joining the conference, and was shut out for just the second time all season (a 3-0 loss versus ECU on March 27 in a series UTSA ultimately won 2-1).

Stellar defense told the story for both teams over the first four innings, as ECU left a total of six UTSA baserunners stranded and the Roadrunners left four Pirates aboard over their first four innings at the plate. Each team only saw one runner reach third base apiece over the first four frames.

ECU looked to break through in the top of the fifth inning. Walker Barron singled to shortstop and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt. Jack Herring flared a base hit to left field with two outs and Barron attempted to score all the way from second base, but a perfect throw from UTSA’s Drew Detlefsen in left field to catcher Andrew Stucky retired Barron at the plate for a huge final out of the half.

UTSA attempted to manufacture a run of its own in the bottom of the fifth. Riley Miller led off with a double to left center field and moved over to third base on a fly ball out to right field off the bat of Detlefsen. ECU reliever Ethan Norby (7-3) bounced back with a key swinging strikeout on a 3-2 offering and forced an inning-ending groundout to shortstop to escape the jam.

ECU finally found the run column in the top of the sixth inning against UTSA relief pitcher Mike DeBattista (3-4). Braden Burress led off with a base hit to right field before Davin Whitaker followed with a single to center. Colby Wallace brought Burress home from third with an RBI base knock to left for the 1-0 Pirate lead. DeBattista picked up a crucial lineout double play in the middle infield and froze Barron looking on a 1-2 pitch to escape the jam.

Norby pitched through traffic once more in the bottom of the seventh. After allowing a leadoff single, Norby struck out UTSA’s Miller swinging and induced a 4-3 double play to halt the Roadrunner offensive. Gavin Marley entered for Norby with a runner on first and one out in the bottom of the eighth and earned a strikeout and forced a flyout to center to again escape trouble.

Charlie Hoagland came on to close the game in the ninth inning and picked up three straight outs. The ECU southpaw lined Jordan Ballin out to left field, forced Brandon Bishop to fly out to center and likewise flew Aidan Eshelman out to right field to end the contest and earn his second save of the year.

Norby was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player after allowing five hits over eight full innings in two relief appearances, giving up one earned run and striking out 12 batters during the weekend to claim a win and a save. Teammates Barron, Burress and Herring joined Norby on the all-tournament team, along with UTSA’s Detlefsen, Christian Hallmark and Connor Kelley.

Other all-tournament selections were UAB’s JP Head, Memphis’ Freddy Rodriguez, Rice’s Kutter-Gage Webb and Wichita State’s Nolan Ganter.
