The East Carolina women’s basketball team defeated Charleston Southern, 91-62, on Tuesday evening in Minges Coliseum. Taylor Barner led all scorers with 32 points in the win.

The Pirates (2-1) and Buccaneers (0-3) got off to a cold start on what wound up being a hot-shooting night in Minges, missing a combined nine shots in a row to start the game. Charleston Southern had the better of much of the first quarter, going up as many as 17-10 thanks to Thelma Barbitch who scored the team’s first 11 points. Barbitch wound up with only 13 thanks to an improved ECU defensive effort.

From the point of 17-10, the Pirates went on an extended 29-4 run to blow the game open. The hosts used a 32-8 second quarter which included an 18-point outburst from Barner to shut the door on the Buccaneers by the halftime break. Barner hit seven shots in what became the highest scoring quarter by an ECU player since Danae McNeal’s 18-point fourth quarter against Cincinnati on Feb. 15, 2023.

Charleston Southern recovered for better second and third quarters, but the damage was done. The 24-point margin was the Pirates biggest single-quarter margin since Dec. 6, 2021 when the team put up a 27-0 (yes, zero) first quarter against NC Central.

Barner continued to lead East Carolina into the second half with 14 more points to finished with 32, the most by a rookie since Ariyana Williams posted the ECU freshman record of 34 points in a Dec. 20, 2017 win over Savannah State.

The Pirates got going shooting the ball after the halftime break with a stretch in the third quarter featuring seven straight made baskets, including back-to-back threes by Kennedy Fauntleroy who finished the game with nine points.

Keanna Rembert also got cooking in the final 20 minutes with eight of her 12 points coming after the break to go with six rebounds in the game. Rembert was one of three Pirates with five-or-more boards, led by Anzhané Hutton’s nine. 11 total ECU players recorded a rebound in the game.

With the game well in hand, a few Pirate freshmen got their first chances to leave their mark as Amaya Shaw scored her first career points while Amanda Smith dished out her first two career assists while recording a rebound and a steal as well.

For a team coach Kim McNeill has called one of her best shooting squads, it showed on Tuesday with 11 made threes by five different players and a 44-percent clip from behind the arc.

The Pirates put up a season-high 20 assists in the game while forcing 24 turnovers for a new total of 76 in three games played this season.
