The bad news for East Carolina in its 2026 opener: it simply could not match Alabama’s overall talent, speed and depth. The good news: the Pirates will not face a sterner test the rest of the season.
Opening on the road against a Power 4 program for the third time in four years, ECU committed crucial mistakes in all three phases to dig a big first-half hole on the way to a 48-10 loss on a blazing hot and humid afternoon at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Led by dynamic quarterback Keelon Russell and a dominant defense, No. 13-ranked Alabama never looked in danger as it extended its win streak to 25 in a row in home openers and 89 straight against non-conference opponents at home dating back to 2007.
ECU, meanwhile, can take heart in the fact that it bounced back from last year’s season-opening loss at NC State to reach a bowl game and ultimately post nine wins.
“You always find out a lot about yourself in game one,” ECU head coach Blake Harrell said. “You kind of think you know where you’re at, but after you play a ballgame, you kind of find out exactly where you’re at. As I told our players in the locker room right then, if you don’t play a good football team, some of those things get overlooked, and Alabama does what a good football team does. When you make mistakes, they capitalize on it, and they don’t make mistakes, and I thought we made some silly mistakes that we’ve got to get cleaned up and corrected.”
A bevy of miscues that included critical penalties came after the Pirates held Alabama to a 41-yard Conor Talty field goal on the game’s opening drive, leading to a 38-7 halftime deficit. A roughing-the-passer penalty aided the Tide’s second drive that ended in a touchdown and a 10-0 lead.
A high snap on ECU’s ensuing possession resulted in a 22-yard loss, then a facemask penalty tacked on 15 yards to a 23-yard punt return by Ryan Coleman-Williams. The Pirates forced a fourth-and-3 at the nine but jumped offsides. Two plays later, Alabama led 17-0.
One of ECU’s few highlights of the day followed when quarterback Mitch Griffis connected with Tyler Johnson on a 68-yard pass then tossed a one-yard strike to Jeremiah Melvin to draw the Pirates. That momentum vanished quickly. Alabama converted a third-and-11 from its 13 when Russell fired a 58-yard strike to Coleman-Williams. Four plays later, Daniel Hall scored for a 24-7 lead.
Two more back-breaking mistakes sealed the Pirates’ fate. Yhonzae Pierre picked off a Griffis pass and returned it 27 yards for a 31-7 lead. Then, with Alabama facing a fourth-and-3 at the eight-yard line, ECU jumped offsides again, erasing an interception in the end zone by Zyeir Gamble. Russell waltzed in on the next play to make it 38-7.
“You always worry that you make the game and the moment bigger than it is,” Harrell said of his team’s mental errors. “Guys are getting amped up to play in a bigger atmosphere or bigger stadium or a well-known brand team, and all of a sudden they lose focus of what they’re doing. So we just had some small mistakes, offsides on fourth downs that were critical mistakes.”
The final statistics spelled out Alabama’s dominance. The Tide outgained ECU 480-162 and piled up 27 first downs compared to just five for the Pirates. Alabama also converted 8-of-15 of third-down attempts, while holding ECU to 0-for-9. Time of possession also played a major factor on a hot day: ECU’s defense spent 38 minutes, 53 seconds, primarily due to the Tide’s ability to run the ball.
The Crimson Tide, which struggled mightily in the run game last year, bullied their way to 227 yards and five touchdowns on the ground, getting scores from four different ball carriers. Russell spearheaded the charge with 86 yards on 13 carries, scoring once on a 3-yard run, and added 249 yards through the air, completing 17 of 29 passes. Hill added two rushing touchdowns with E.J. Crowell and Trae’shawn Brown scoring one each.
ECU, hoping to establish a ground attack, managed just two net yards on 22 attempts, marking the seventh lowest total in school history. The Pirates had just 41 offensive snaps compared to 80 for Alabama.
“We’ve got to be able to run the football and stop the run, and we did neither today,” Harrell said. “That’s where we’ve got to get back to work. That’s going to open up everything else, that’s going to allow us to be more aggressive on defense, that’s going to allow us to throw the ball downfield offensively. We’ve got to go back to work and take a hard look at that.”
Griffis, who appeared in 30 games and had a 4-6 record as a starter at Wake Forest and Texas Tech, directed ECU offense for three quarters and completed 10-of-16 passes for 137 yards. Miami transfer Emory Williams played the final quarter and completed 1-of-3 passes for 23 yards. The Pirates were without receiver Brock Spalding, its lone returning starter from last season, and receiver Landon Sides, a transfer from North Texas.
“It takes all of us; it’s a full 11 on the field,” Griffis said of the offensive struggles. “Run game, pass game, it all complements each other. I could have done a better job of getting us in some more manageable situations by completing some more passes and not taking negatives. That turnover was on me. It was a close ball game, and I threw a pick-six, so I’ll take the blame for all that. But we’ll get it fixed and get it going.”
