The East Carolina women’s basketball team will head into conference play on a wining streak as the Pirates took their fourth straight game in an 81-59 thumping of Campbell on Sunday in Minges Coliseum. Five ECU players scored in double figures in the win.

The Pirates (8-5) began the game on a 9-2 run and closed the first quarter on a 7-0 run to open up an early lead. Keanna Rembert led all scorers in the first quarter with seven points as the hosts went up 22-17 after 10 minutes played. Part of Rembert’s first-period effort was a made three-point shot, marking three-consecutive games with a made three for the senior forward.

Though Campbell (7-6) briefly cut into the lead in the second, a quick 6-0 run with some stingy defense got ECU up by 10 for the first time, 30-20, and forced a Camels timeout at the 5:30 mark of the period. The run was extended to eight straight on a Zaniah Zellous post score to put the Pirates up a dozen before it finally ended.

Campbell was able to keep the game in reach in large part thanks to their shooting from behind the arc. The team made four baskets from three-point range in the first half. Because of that, the visitors were able to get back within five shortly before the halftime break after making four of their final five shots of the second. A foul on a Zellous shot and two made free throws made it a 38-31 ballgame at the break.

Zellous scored eight points in the first half, besting her previous season- and career-high for a game of seven. She was tied with Anzhané Hutton for a team high in scoring at the break. Hutton finished the day with a game-high 14 points.

In the second half, back-to-back threes by Kennedy Fauntleroy at the 7:33 and 6:50 marks of the third quarter made it a 13-point game before Jayla Hearp punctuated what was then a 10-0 run with a fast-break layup. Hearp finished the game with 13 points on a team-best 6-9 shooting from the field. With ECU leading 48-33, Campbell was forced to use another timeout at the 6:01 mark, having missed their last five shots.

The Camels did not score until their drought reached 5:07 and the scoring run had extended to 14-0. Olivia Hilliard knocked down a three-point shot at the buzzer to end the third quarter with ECU leading by 19, 59-40.

In the fourth quarter, with the Pirates running away with the game, two players hit significant milestones:

First, with a pair of free throws with 5:01 remaining in the game, Hutton recorded her 1,000th career point.

Then, less than a minute later, with a rebound at the 4:08 mark Zellous secured her first career double-double. The rookie finished the game with 10 points and 10 rebounds in 18 minutes played.

The Pirates led by as many as 25 points in the final quarter before going to the bench in the final minutes. Every player who recorded more than three minutes of game time scored for the hosts with five–Hutton, Zellous, Hearp, Fauntleroy and Taylor Barner—scoring in double figures.

For the stat nerds: The Pirates shot 49.1 percent on exactly 28-57 from the field for the second game in a row. The team won 81-59 after an 80-59 result last time out. Consistency.
