Makenzie Mason has been named director of operations/assistant coach for the East Carolina softball program according to an announcement from fifth-year head coach Shane Winkler on Monday.

Mason joins the Pirates’ staff after spending the last two years of her collegiate career on ECU’s roster. The Fayetteville native served as a student assistant last season and was part of a Pirate team that posted strong offensive numbers including hitting a program record 76 home runs. Mason played in 56 games in her first season with the Pirates, slashing numbers of .296/.313/.377 and drawing 15 walks at the plate while stealing four bases.

“We are very fortunate to be able to keep Makenzie around as our Director of Operations,” Winkler said. “She learned a great amount last year as a student assistant and she’s going to continue to add to our program in a number of ways. She is passionate about helping this program take our next step towards winning the American Conference.”

Prior to arriving in Greenville, Mason spent her first three seasons at UConn that included a 2023 campaign where she had seven multi-hit games, a six game on-base streak and a perfect fielding percentage in 47 games played.
