Could ECU baseball alum Clayton McCullough win NL manager of the year for Marlins?

by | Aug 4, 2025

It’s already been a historic season for the Miami Marlins. Could more be in store?

The Marlins just swept the New York Yankees at home. A record three-day crowd of 101,545 attended the series. The three wins puts Miami at 55-55 on the season, 5.5 games out of the NL wild-card spot. It’s the first time the team has been at .500 or better since they were 8-8 on April 15.

It’s all thanks in part to the leadership of manager Clayton McCullough. The ECU baseball alum has the team playing some of its best baseball and all while fellow ECU alum Connor Norby has been injured. Norby has taken to social media several times to praise his team and lash out at their critics.

McCullough and the Marlins host the Houston Astros starting Monday. A good showing there only enhances the chances for him and the team to reach the postseason.

Not bad for a team that lost 100 games last season before McCullough came over to be manager after years as the Los Angeles Dodgers’ first-base coach.

CBSSports.com wrote in part, “However, Miami has lost just one of its past 12 series (10-1-1), and the Marlins are 30-14 since June 13. They have won five in a row.

The Marlins have been doing some amazing things of late.

On Sunday, the Marlins completed a three-game sweep over the visiting New York Yankees. It was the first sweep over the Yankees in Marlins history.”

“It’s been a steady climb,” Marlins rookie manager Clayton McCullough said. “To get to .500 is great. It took a lot of work to get here. Now we have to get ready for Houston.”
