Spring Training: Alec Burleson, Gavin Williams, Connor Norby shine in Sunday victories

by | Mar 10, 2025

Alec Burleson hit his first home run of the season for the St. Louis Cardinals in a 6-5 win on Sunday over the New York Yankees in Spring Training.

Burleson hit a solo homer in the second inning. He finished 1-for-3 to raise his Spring Training batting average to .286.

He also sat down with Fox2Now.com’s Martin Kilcoyne for an extensive interview about Spring Training, the upcoming season and more.

Gavin Williams shines again

Gavin Williams had his longest outing of Spring Training and showed his in his prime.

He went 3.2 innings, giving up two hits with a walk and seven strikeouts. His ERA now sits at 1.13. He struck out one in the first, struck out all three batters in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth before being lifted.

SI.com has Williams as the most impressive pitcher for Cleveland in Spring Training.

A healthy Gavin Williams has certainly looked like the player he had the potential to be when he was one of the top prospects in Cleveland’s organization just a few years ago.”

Connor Norby powers Fish

Connor Norby’s big bat helped the Miami Marlins top the Houston Astros, 10-6, on Sunday.

Norby went 2-for-5 with a run scored and RBI to improve his Spring Training batting average to .292. He singled in the first and scored Miami’s first run. He doubled in the second and drove in a run to give Miami a 3-0 lead.

Agnos struggles again

Zach Agnos struggled again for the Colorado Rockies in Sunday’s game with the Seattle Mariners.

He came on in the fourth inning and gave up a solo home run in the fifth inning. He finished with two hits in 1.1 innings as his Spring Training ERA went up to 5.68. It was also his first blown save.

He’s pitched in six games for the Rockies in Spring Training, going 6.1 innings with three strikeouts.

Carson Whisenhunt back in Triple-A

The Carson Whisenhunt experiment is over for now as the San Francisco Giants have reassigned the ECU alumni.

Whisenhunt will likely return to Triple-A after a solid two outings in Spring Training. He threw scoreless ball, giving up a hit with no walks and two strikeouts.

He’ll likely end up back with Sacramento with hopes of being called up to the majors later in the season, according to AroundTheFoghorn.com.

While Whisenhunt throws from the left side and the Giants have an obvious need for a second left-handed reliever in the bullpen, they would prefer to stretch him out as a starter.”
