Cardinals manager: Alec Burleson to play 1B, DH in 2025

by | Feb 24, 2025

When you see ECU alum Alec Burleson on the field for the St. Louis Cardinals, expect to see him play at first base or designated hitter.

That’s what his manager, Oliver Marmol, said on Monday, according to MLB.com writer John Denton, who covers the Cardinals. He posted the news to his X account over the weekend.

“#STLCards manager Oliver Marmol said he purposefully split up Willson Contreras and Alec Burleson so that one can start at 1B each day. Contreras starts today vs. the #Marlins, while Burleson will likely start tomorrow vs. the #Astros. They will split time at 1B and DH in 2025.”

According to Burleson has played 140 of his 270 MLB games in his three-year career in the outfield, compared to 38 at first base and 87 at DH. He also reports Burleson would play in the outfield if his bat is needed.

The Cardinals are trying to fill the void left by Paul Goldschmidt, who played first base last season. Burleson has experience at first base, DH and the outfield and has even pitched at ECU.
