The East Carolina women’s basketball team defeated Furman on Thursday evening in Minges Coliseum. The Pirates were led by Jayla Hearp once again with 14 points and five steals.

The game was the first meeting of the Pirates (2-1) and Paladins (2-2) since the 1995-96 season, and it was a no-doubter as the hosts used a 22-7 first quarter to open up a lead they never threatened to give up. Hearp led all scorers in the opening frame with eight points while Amiya Joyner snagged six rebounds. Joyner went on to have a solid game on the glass with 10 boards despite struggling scoring the ball with only four points.

Khia Miller led the way in the second quarter with seven points as she finally got herself going. The sophomore went on to post a 10-point outing with a pair of made triples. The Pirates led by a dozen, 34-22, at the halftime break.

After allowing Furman to hang around a bit, the Pirates put the game away for good with a 15-0 run late in the third quarter which turned into a 20-3 run into the fourth quarter. Seven different players scored during the run which turned a 37-30 knee-knocked into a 57-33 thumping.

In the second half, a few notable events happened for some Pirate newcomers. In the third, Anzhané Hutton grabbed a board to give herself 500 for her career while in the fourth, Timia Ware notched her first bucket as a Pirate with a sweet mid-range jumper.

The game wound up being another low-scoring affair, but that’s where the Pirates are at their best—lest we forget the final score of the 2023 AAC title game. On Thursday, the team forced 24 turnovers on Furman and converted to the tune of 20 points off of turnovers.
