IRVING, Texas – East Carolina sophomore quarterback Katin Houser has been named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week, while fellow classmate Zakye Baker was named to the weekly honor roll according to an announcement by the league office Monday.
In addition to his offensive honor, Houser was also named to the Davey O’Brien Great 8 and the selected as a Manning Star of the Week.
Houser, who guided the Pirates to a 49-14 win over Florida Atlantic, completed 17 of 22 passes for a career-best 343 yards with five touchdowns. He also ran for a personal-best 52 yards which included a career-long 35-yard touchdown run. The Anaheim, Calif. native became the third player in school history to toss five touchdowns in consecutive games joining Shane Carden (2013) and Dominique Davis (2010) to accomplish the feat. Since being named the Pirates starting quarterback, he has completed 57 of 89 passes for 894 yards with 13 touchdowns and helped his squad to 1,444 yards of total offense.
Barker led the Pirates defensive unit with eight tackles (two solo) and 2.5 TFLs for minus 10 yards, which included a seven-yard sack. ECU’s defense forced two Owl turnovers marking the seventh time this season with two or more in a contest.
The duos selection marks the sixth time a Pirate has been honored by the league office this year, which includes Jake Garcia (honor roll/Sep. 2), Rahjai Harris (honor roll/Sep. 9), Noah Perez (special teams’ player of the week/Sep. 30), Houser (honor roll/Oct. 28) and Ja’Marley Riddle (honor/Oct. 28).
